Synopsis: Episode 1
It was 1999, April. The main character, Jotaro Kujo, arrives at a town named Morioh in S city, Japan, in search for a guy named Higashikata. As he walks past the train station, he sees a young guy surrounded by a group of punks. It seems that one of the thug was beating up on a turtle, but the young guy doesn’t confront; instead, he starts apologizing for his ignorance and juvenile mannerism. Jotaro feels sick at the scene, but, the next moment, he catches a shocking piece of news. The young guy’s name is Josuke Higashikata, the very person Jotaro has been looking for.
The show starts from a surprising opening scene, and this is especially true for long-time Jojo series fans.
Two delicious-looking pieces of toast, a glorious fried egg, completed by a bowl of fresh salad… This is the picture-perfect breakfast… Hold it. Hold it right there, do not indulge yourself in the food porn, pay attention!
Look very closely at the right hand placed at the corner of your screen. I will tell you why it’s important to pay attention to that hand. In the beginning, all you see is a right hand, because the graphic is trimmed to fit the screen size. As the camera pans out you will start seeing the bigger picture. Did you notice that? The right hand you saw earlier, has a wrist, and arm, but it stops there. That arm doesn’t belong to any body. This odd sight suggests something meaningful, my friend… It’s hinting a presence of Kira – the key personality who joins later in the show.
In this episode you will see three main characters’ first encounter; Koichi Hiroshi, Josuke Higashikata, and Jotaro Kujo.
First, let’s look at Jotaro Kujo, JOJO in short. As noted earlier, he comes to visit Morioh of S City. He has an uncle, who is younger than himself. Jojo’s mission is to find the uncle and to discuss inheritance, and, to inform him of a danger coming to this town.
Next, let’s look at Josuke, let’s call him JOJO number 2. He has a gentle heart and soft manner, but, you should never, ever, criticize his hairstyle. Because if you do, he flips, and you wish you hadn’t opened your mouth.
Today, JOJO #2 is on his way to school, and, he runs into his senpai punks, who bully Josuke and the turtle. Josuke apologizes, but, the moment his hairstyle becomes the center of ridicule, he flips. “Astro Boy hairdo” One of the punks scoffs, and, Josuke snaps, “who the hell looks like Sazae-san you fool?!” Ah, excuse me? No one mentioned Sazae-sa… Ahen, I’m still unsure how he mixed up the name, but anyways, it proves that Josuke takes his hairdo veeeery seriously and no one, ever, should make fun of him.
Josuke uses his “Stand” (his special ability) to beat up that punk, and, not only that, he also cures the poor turtle. Right, Josuke is a warm-hearted person. After the commotion subsided, Jotaro and Josuke introduce each other.
Jotaro explains the reason why he came to visit. Josuke is a private child of Jotaro’s grandfather, named Joseph Joestar. Even though Josuke is younger than Jotaro, according to the family tree, Josuke is an uncle of Jotaro. In future when Joseph Joestar passes away, Josuke can claim the right to receive his share of the inheritance. Joseph Joestar is a hugely successful real estate tycoon. He has made an enormous amount of fortune, so, the size of his inheritance would be tremendous. Despite this pleasing news, Josuke declines; he asks that his and his mother’s names get excluded from the inheritance deal.
At this point, Jotaro mentions something about Josuke’s hairdo. Two JOJO immediately engage in a fight. The intense battle leaves JOJO no choice but to stop the time, which is his special ability. Even if it is only as short as 0.5 seconds, it is enough to prove Josuke’s hidden potential. Birds of a feather… Josuke definitely inherits the secret ability of the JOJO family.
The scene changes and Josuke runs into a convenience store robbery, and once again, Josuke’s hairdo becomes the center of attention. Ignoring the police’s instructions, furious Josuke charges at the thug who is threatening the female hostage on a tip of a knife. Normal people wouldn’t dare to walk up to a criminal holidng a weapon, let alone to discuss one’s hair style. By the way, you will see some of the JOJO series characters in the crowds at the scene. Can you count? As long as I can identify, there are the Nijimura brothers, Rohan Kishibe, etc.
Josuke uses his Stand (special ability) called “Shining Diamond” to rescue the hostage without inflicting a scratch, while he embeds the robbery’s big survival knife inside the guy’s stomach. Like, whaaaat?!
This, is the awesome thing about the JOJO series. They can pull off the craziest, most unthinkable thing beyond your wildest imagination, and that’s hilarious.
It turns out that the thief was controlled by a creepy “Stand” that belongs to a guy named Angelo – the dangerous guy, from whom Jotaro warned Josuke to stay away.
Because Josuke hindered the attempted robbery, Angelo grows interest in Josuke and searches his house. The first episode ends with the ominous shadow of Angelo. What’s waiting in the second episode and beyond? Let’s keep our eyes on them.
