“Beauty is Quiet Like a Stone Statue”
Kyouka Izumi was used as an assassin because of her abilities. She is as innocent as to ask for boiled Tofu dish in exchange for revealing the mastermind of her deeds. Atsushi feels sympathy for her after hearing her background. However, Kunikida questions Atsushi whether he has the resolve to shoulder full responsibility for her or not. While he cannot decide to hand her in to the military police, he goes out for a date with Kyouka in Yokohama. Meanwhile, missing Dazai is locked up in the Port Mafia’s jail. Akutagawa swears at him as a traitor and “former executive”.
Kyouka, who was saved by Atsushi in the previous episode, revealed to Atsushi and Kunikida that she could not control her own ability and was controlled by the orders of Akutagawa coming through her cell phone. She seems to have repeatedly committed murders against her will.
Later, Atsushi and Kyouka went out for sightseeing in Yokohama, calling it a date. According to the official anime website, this city is supposed to be fictional based on the actual city of Yokohama. This episode showed existing buildings and dating spots lively with the real Yokohama scenery. The sites will make another famous pilgrimage for the enthusiastic fans.
Right after their adorable dating scenes, Kyouka visited the police to hand herself in to atone for the sins she had committed. But Akutagawa showed up in front of the two right in time and abducted Atsushi.
Despite having learned that Atsushi got abducted, the Armed Detective Agency was too busy with the jobs they had been working on prior to the news and discussed whether they should take actions or not. It is rather natural for the Japanese point of view to prioritize their own jobs, but it made me wonder what viewers overseas thought of these scenes. I’m very curious to learn if this is unique to Japanese or not.
At a word of the president, the members of the agency started working on finding Atsushi, but Ranpo wasn’t too enthusiastic about it. He was the one who originally suggested that they shouldn’t be taking actions, but he changed his mind right away by the word of the president, Yukichi Fukuzawa, “I’ll give you praise”. He showed a really cute and easy side of his here, but the show did not illustrate the series of his emotions enough to convey us why Ranpo suddenly and easily wanted to work on it by the president’s reward of praise alone.
Meanwhile, Dazai was still locked up by Port Mafia. It seems that he and Akutagawa used to work together as a superior and his subordinate. I had thought that they were working together as partners before this episode, but learned that his partner was Chuuya Nakahara, another executive of Port Mafia shown in this episode. Their interactions and dialogues of slamming each other as ex-partners were very enjoyable with great pacing.
We still do not know the reason and purpose of Dazai having been locked up by Port Mafia, nor Nakahara’s ability “For the Tainted Sorrow” was revealed yet, as their battle scene was interrupted right before it started. I’m looking forward to the next episode.
