‘Bakuon!!’ is an anime with high school girls riding motorbikes.
Previously, the main character Hane Sakura got hooked on motorbikes, thanks to Onsa Amano. She goes to driving school and meets a girl Rin Suzunoki, who is a Suzuki zealot.
I wonder what will happen in Episode 2.
Episode 2 ‘School!!’
The anime opening theme song is on from this episode.
It’s called ‘FEEL X ALIVE’ by Sayaka Sasaki.
The melody is very refreshing, and the chorus part is especially nice, perfectly matched with the image of 5 main characters (plus Hijiri on a sidecar) zip along the coastline.
The main episode consists of three parts; ‘Rin’s past’, ‘Hijiri Minowa’s club registration’ and ‘Hane obtaining a license’.
To find out why Rin is now a Suzuki zealot, we have to go back to her childhood with her father.
Her father had dreamed of riding the Suzuki classic ‘KATANA’, but he couldn’t get a license for a heavy motorbike. So, he had to ride a ‘GSX400S KATANA’ instead.
In spite of her father’s reluctance, Rin used to love to sit at the back of his motorbike.
Her father got seriously injured in an accident earlier, Little Rin wanted to make her father’s dream come true by trying to win the newer model of KATANA, which was going to be out soon. She wrote an essay on how much she loved the KATANA and submitted it to the manufacturer to enter the competition.
This episode is simply moving and you’ll get emotional seeing how desperate little Rin was.
Rin gets her license and now rides a ‘GSX400S KATANA’, which was handed down to her from her father.
At the same time, her father luckily got the license for a heavy motorbike as well as the new model KATANA.
It is a real funny but unfair ending for Rin that her father calls her motorbike ‘GSX400S KATANA’ a fake, even though it originally belonged to him.
By the way, according to Rin’s license between her teeth, this anime must be set in 2011 (Year of Heisei 23).
I understand the anime is based on the original manga. However, I was quite surprised to see the original year setting as the manga in this TV anime, because I always thought it is normally reset to the actual time unless it’s vital to keep it original. So, this was unexpected.
Onsa is eager to have Rin as a new club member, and she praises Rin’s precious motorbike the ‘GSX400S KATANA’ in stark contrast to the previous episode.
Rin is so moved and almost has second thoughts about Onsa, but she finds out that Onsa is actually just buttering up to deceive her.
Constant bullying of Suzuki is still clearly visible in Episode 2.
Hijiri Minowa’s club registration
Hijiri appears only briefly in Episode 1, but this ladylike girl comes to the club for a registration.
She has a fantasy of deeply soaking into the mad and violent motorbike world like in the movie ‘Rebel Without a Cause’. She suggests Onsa and Rin to end their quarrel by holding ‘a game of chicken’.
On the riverside, Onsa, Rin and everyone from the motorbike club get ready for the race. Raimu carries Hane at the back on her bike, and Butler Hayakawa rides a sidecar DUCATI 750SS with Hijiri.
As a result, Onsa and Rin, who originally cause this whole race, don’t want to risk their precious motorbikes and pull out of the race as soon as the race begins.
The rest of them totally forget why they are on the race, and it comes down to the race of Raimu against Butler Hayakawa (and Hijiri).
Raimu puts a break on at the real edge of the riverside, but Butler Hayakawa and Hijiri ride straight into the river without breaking.
Hijiri and her bike are totally soaked, but she is truly satisfied with the fact that she is in the ‘evil world’.
This is how the motorbike club gains another new member…
It is funny to see Hijiri’s loopy and ditzy character during the game of chicken. On top of that, it is hilarious watching how similar Rin and Onsa react when it comes to motorbikes. They immediately pull out of the race in order to save their precious motorbikes.
Hane obtaining a license
Hane names her training motorbike ‘Baita’. Somehow, it speaks and helps Hane out by giving useful advice.
At last, Hane faces a final licensing examination. At the exam, she realizes that she must ride a newer model motorbike, not Baita. It doesn’t respond her back like how Baita does, and it makes Hane really nervous.
Her 4 friends, Onsa and others soon become disappointed with Hane loosing her confidence. However, Hijiri pulls everyone together saying, ‘we all survived the game of chicken!’ and they begin to cheer Hane up from the rooftop.
I think that her news on passing the exam keeps the bonds between her and Baita warmer. It also plays a big role to build the friendship among the club members. It was genuinely a heartwarming episode.
Overall, there are so many points that indicate this anime is kind of dirty. For example, the name ‘Baita’ could mean a bitch/whore. Another example is seen in how Hijiri sits with her legs wide apart while wearing a skirt. So, it could seem really obscene, but it also manages to keep fun, easygoing and crazy atmosphere throughout the anime because of this simple silliness.
The title for Episode 3 is ‘debut!!’ Is Hane finally riding on the road? I can’t wait to see how she goes. All right, I’ll see you all next time!
