Fate/kaleid liner Prisma☆Illya 3rei!! Episode 01 Review: “City Fading to Silver”
“Gin’iro ni Shizumu Machi” (銀色に沈む街)
Have you missed Illya and her cute little band of friends? Here is a fourth season with all the magical cuteness you can take.
In case you have no idea what this is, ‘Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya’ is a series by Silver Link based on the manga by Hiroshi Hiroyama. It started in 2013 and it’s still going strong, with a game released for the Nintendo 3DS and the manga ongoing.
It’s a spin-off of Type-Moon’s visual novel, ‘Fate/stay night’, set in an alternate universe.
What is this Anime about
Illyasviel von Einzbern, our main character, used to be an ordinary student until the day she met a Kaleidostick called Ruby. Ruby decided that Illya was a more suitable master than the sorceress Rin, and thus the little girl was tasked with collecting the seven Class Cards which contain the spirit of legendary heroes.
The episode starts right where we left it on the previous season. Do you want a reminder?
Illya had just acquired a new power that puts her own body at risk. She is the first line of attack against their enemy while her nakama (なかま、friends) provide her with support. In the decisive battle both the demon and Illya use all their power in a final clash that saw Illya emerge as the winner and Miyu rescued. In the peaceful days that follow, Miyu helps her friends with their summer homework, because even heroes need to be diligent students. In the meantime, Irisviel and Caren discover that the crater created in the battle has disappeared into a parallel world where the eight card is recovered by two mysterious characters.
The new season starts right there: our girls are at Miyu’s mansion after their study session. Their easy-going days were not bound to last, however. The crater created during their last battle has been mysteriously disappeared and the team goes to the mountain to investigate. In the meantime, we find out that the eighth Class Card has been retrieved by two extremely powerful characters. Our heroes battle the two strangers who are after Miyu.
After the battle in which Miyu was abducted, Illya finds herself in a parallel universe where it’s winter instead of summer and where the town is deserted instead of full with people. There she meets a mysterious amnesic girl.
Where is Illya? Who is the mysterious girl? Will she find her friends and rescue Miyu? Who is Miyu? What happened here? Where is the eighth card? Why is there a parallel universe?
These are the questions that will set the themes for this new season of ‘Fate/kaleid liner Prisma☆Illya’.
Expect a lot of silly moments, cute camaraderie sequences and ‘we are strong only when we are together’ monologues.
Genres: Action, Comedy, Fantasy, Magic, Slice of Life
The show is not the best in the animation department. It’s not the sharpest or the most impressive, but its awesome perspective shifts and matching musical score continue to create some of the most dynamic action sequences we’ve seen in recent seasons. This episode had only one battle and from its start to its end you knew that the season is going to be if not the same then better than the last.
If you are a fan of loli moments, they are back, but don’t expect the intensity of the previous seasons. If that changes in future episodes, it remains to be seen.
The show is directed by Shin Ōnuma, Masato Jinbo, and Ken Takahashi of Silver Link.
It is written by Kenji Inoue, and Hazuki Minase, while the music is written by TECHNOBOYS PULCRAFT GREEN-.
The opening theme is “Asterism” by ChouCho, and the ending theme is “WHIMSICAL WAYWARD WISH” by TECHNOBOYS PULCRAFT GREEN-FUND feat. Yumeha Kouda.
The role of Sapphire was recast following the regretful death of voice actress Miyu Matsuki on October 27, 2015. Yumi Kakazu is the new voice of Sapphire.
And the rating is…
Even though I wasn’t entirely fascinated by the premiere, I must say that I expect this season to be the best in the franchise thus far. Part hunch and part that I have read the manga, I think Illya is going to offer us an enjoyable season.
