An anime fan before gamer, translator, writer, tutor and everything else.
91 days never fails to surprise its audience in every episode. NEVER.
After a series of cruel, merciless, cold-blooded killings, one will naturally have expected this story to have an exciting, action-packed finale. So, 91 days prepares a BIG surprise for its audience: a peaceful, heart-warming, sentimental ending for a vengeance story. I believe that no one had expected this mafia story to have an ending like this.
The final episode happened some time after the death of Don Galassia and Vincent Vanetti at the playhouse. Nero and the Vanettis escaped to the Island and hid at Fango’s old headquarter but the Galassias showed no mercy on them. They killed every single Vanetti member they saw, except Avilio and Nero who somehow escaped from Lawless in Cerrotto’s car.
Avilio and Nero begin to travel, like what they did in episode 4. They eat together, they take turns to drive, they camp in the forest……as if nothing happened between them, just like the old days when they had just known each other. Although they made it clear that they hate each other for what they did to their family, they travel in peace. If they can let their hatred and vengeance go, maybe they can become each other’s “meaning to live”, since both of them have lost everything and have no other kin in this world. If only they could forgive and forget their hatred…
91 Days left an interesting ending for the audience. When the duo reached the beach, like Avilio suggested, they walked on the sand together. While Avilio is following behind Nero, looking at Nero’s footsteps on the sand, he suddenly realised something: he is actually following Nero’s footstep. Like Nero, he could not kill the last survivor of the family.
Therefore, after Avilio explained his reasons to Nero, he walks past Nero and straighten up his body. He is clearly aware that Nero is going to kill him from the back and he accepts it with dignity. After all, what must come, will come one day. Why not today.
As for Nero, he relives the moment when he was aiming at young Angelo. However, this time, he understands that he made a wrong decision seven years ago and it is time for him to correct it.
Some audiences argue that Nero did not kill Avilio in the end because there is no sign of Avilio’s body anywhere. But do not forget what Avilio shouted in rage in this episode: You should have just killed me back then! Because of Nero’s mercy seven years ago, Avilio had a miserable life, surviving like a walking dead. He even described the pain he felt is worse than death. In other words, If Nero had killed young Angelo back then, Avilio would never have to experience the pain of losing everything in one night. Death might be a better option for young Angelo. Hence, Nero shall not and must not become soft again. He must finish what he didn’t complete seven years ago: kill Avilio a.k.a. Angelo Lagusa.
Although Nero left the beach alone with a can of Avilio’s favourite pineapple, we can foresee that he will not live long too because he has been followed by a car, probably sent by the Galassias. The whole story finishes with the serenity of the sea and sentimental music, providing a calm, peaceful moment to mourn for the dead.
When all the footsteps on the shore are washed out by the wave, I can’t help but to feel: how powerless life is in front of nature. A few minutes ago, Avilio was still walking on the beach. Then, before you know it, he is gone. He left nothing behind, not even his footstep or a single proof that he once lived in this world. His 91 days of excitement were for nothing. He does not feel happy or alive once he destroyed the Vanettis and killed all the people on the list, except Nero. In the end, he is back to his old self: the lifeless, emotionless, lonely guy. The only moment he looks alive is when he knows he is going to die. How ironic.
Well, I guess this was the most beautiful ending for this mafia story. I thought my mind will be blown away by actions and guns in the last episode, or perhaps bite all my finger nails when Nero and Avilio are pointing guns to each other’s brain. But like I said, 91 days is always full of surprises, you’ll never know how the story goes.
Thanks to 91 days, we had something to look forward to every week in the hot, sweaty summer. Hopefully the team will produce more exciting anime like 91 days soon!
