If you have watched this episode, you must have a strong impression on this statement, as it is Colteo’s promise of selfless loyalty to Avilio. On top of that, it is also Colteo’s unfinished last words.
Yes, Colteo, the timid man who never wanted to involved with the mafia, died in this episode. I would say that his death is the most touching and pitiful one so far because, unlike others who died, Colteo was not part of the mafia before Avilio showed up. Aside from the fact that he killed Fango in the most brutal way (in episode 08, if you like to revisit the scene), he actually resembles “an ordinary citizen” in this story. He had no intention to harm people and often shows compassionate when he sees people suffer. If he had not reunited with Avilio, he might had become a college student now. Well, regardless how innocent he was, he had to die in this episode because he was Avilio’s proof of good faith to Nero.
Compared to other characters, Colteo’s presence is plain and unappealing. He looks like a weak and useless character, especially when he started to make some trouble in episode 8. However, we must not forget that Colteo also did a lot of dedications in this story.
First of all, Avilio might never get close to Nero and start his revenge plan without Colteo’s delicious brew– Lawless Heaven. And we all know how useful Lawless Heaven is in this story. It is like a pass which allows you to access all places! Avilio even used it to approach the mad clown Fango.
Secondly, Colteo was the only messenger to whom Avilio could rely on. He helped Avilio to get Cerotto to reveal the whereabouts of Serpente’s body. He also went to meet Fango with Avilio and brought Avilio’s message to Nero while Avilio stayed there as hostage. Furthermore, he often reminded Avilio of his revenge plan so he would not forget what he was doing. Without Colteo, Avilio might had a harder time in gaining Nero’s trust.
Lastly, Colteo was also the last touch of humanity and sensibility Avilio had. Even though Avilio was cool and merciless in executing his revenge, he never intended to ruin Colteo’s life. That is why he kept a distance with Colteo and asked him to leave once he had the money to pursue his college dream. Unfortunately, to Colteo, Avilio is more important than anything else, including his own life. When Colteo was caught and interrogated, Avilio tried to save him, even if that would spoil his revenge plan. Therefore, we know how important Colteo is to Avilio whose head was full of vengeance and no mercy. Once Avilio rescued him from Ganzo’s hand, the two brothers went back to Avilio’s old room where he received the letter in episode o1. They spent some quality time together, like a family, and you can even see Avilio’s genuine smile, like a normal teenager. This is exactly why Colteo must die in this story. If Avilio has a soft spot in his heart, he may not be able to get himself to kill Nero in the end, since they had been through a lot together and built up an unbreakable bond with each other.
Hence, we can conclude that Colteo is actually a very important role in this story, even though his appearance is weak and does not give us strong impression like Fango. Although Avilio lost his blood-related brother seven years ago, he gained a brother-in-hand who, perhaps, is much better than a true brother. We did see what blood-related brothers can do when they disagree with each other. If you can’t recall, watch episode 05 and 07!
Colteo might not had to die if he did not to return to Lawless after receiving Ganzo’s phone call. Even Avilio’s landlady advised him to stay away from Avilio because she could tell that Avilio means trouble. Yet, Colteo chose to return and saved Avilio from Barbero’s interrogation. He did not only protect Avilio but also pointed out Barbero’s real intention to Nero, raising Nero’s suspicion towards Barbero’s loyalty. Colteo was also smart enough not to exposed Ganzo’s evil plan when Barbero asked him who saved him out of garage. Thanks to that, Avilio can still work with Ganzo to take down the Vanettis.
When Colteo knew that Avilio was going to kill him under Nero’s order, he was relief. He is happy for Avilio because he understands that once he is gone, no one will get in Avilio’s way again. Avilio was in pain but he knew what he supposed to do. He could not understand why Colteo risked his life to come back for him. When Colteo raised his hand to explained why, Avilio killed him instantly, without letting him finished his last words:
Because we are brothers.
That was the end of Avilio’s last humanity. Now, we can sit back and see how Avilio finishes his revenge, as well as his own life…Because he promised to meet Colteo once all of this is over.
Things are getting more and more serious now…
