Hello everyone! The weekend is finally here! The holidays are basically over the corner and I am really looking forward to the winter break from University as well as the time I will get to spend with my friends and family during the holidays! I am almost sure you do too! 🙂 But even though we are getting into the holiday mood, we still have another three episodes of Natsume Yujincho. We are finally nearing the end, and this makes me get overflowed with emotions that are a weird mix of bittersweet, sad and happy. This is the power that Natsume Yujincho has over me, and I am convinced over many other people as well. Hey, you might be one of those people too!
This week’s episode was quite different from what we got last week. It was back to Natsume and Nyanko-sensei. Nevertheless, we didn’t see Natsume giving any names back. As a matter of fact, throughout the whole fifth season, if my memory doesn’t betray me, we saw Natsume giving a name back to the youkai only once! Quite a change from the past seasons where he would practically be giving names back in every single episode.
Then again, the episode itself was a really sweet one. Of course, it left me with the bittersweet aftertaste, but that is exactly the thing about Natsume Yujincho. Anyway, without further ado! Let’s get down to business and see what happened in this particular episode!
Japanese Title: 険しきをゆく
The episode was revolving around a tiny youkai that got a scratch on his mask because of Natsume. The youkai wanted to join the so called Shuon-sama, who I assume is a deity. The tiny youkai was once saved by Shuon-sama, and from that point onward they started spending a lot of time together, became friends and very attached to one another. However, as it is with the youkai, or in this case in particular with deities, they don’t really stay in the same place for a long time. There are things that need to be done, taken care of, and especially with gods, there are a lot of responsibilities. We had seen many cases were the youkai and a specific human made a bond, a special connection, but because of their worlds being so different and practically living in different worlds, they were unable to keep that bond burning and alive. A human life is a very miserable thing to begin with, if compared to that of an immortal youkai. The time flows differently for us and them, which also gets in the way of human/youkai relationships.
However, this episode showed us that this is also the case even when it comes to the relationships of creatures and beings that do not belong to our human world. A god and a lowly youkai cannot stay together no matter what… Or maybe?
The tiny youkai we meet tries his best to be noticed by Shuon-sama, so the latter can take him away with him, and let the little thing join his godly procession. However, our little friend overhears other youkai‘s conversations, where they mention offerings to Shuon-sama. One of them even suggests offering a human to Shuon-sama. This get the tiny youkai thinking if he should offer Natsume to Shuon-sama. Nyanko-sensei overhears this, but decides not to tell Natsume, because he thinks this might a good lesson for our hero, who runs ahead to help every single youkai that asks him for help.
But when the time comes, after actually meeting and talking to Shuon-sama, and being asked what offerings he has by one of the henchmen, the little youkai remembers how Natsume helped him, how Natsume tagged along with him through his search for a fitting outfit to present himself in front of Shuon-sama, and he doesn’t have the strength in himself to suggest Natsume as an offering to Shuon-sama.
After being turned down, and being completely devastated, the above-mentioned henchman shows up and gives the little youkai a guide on how to become one of Shuon-sama’s henchmen. I would like to believe that Shuon-sama wouldn’t bestow this opportunity onto our little friend if the latter in actuality did end up offering Natsume to Shuon-sama. Shuon-sama gave me the impression of somebody kindhearted, and somebody who loves the surrounding world as well as all living creatures, be it animals or humans. In any case, we could say that this was a happy ending. It surely will take ages for our little man to finish the training, but I believe that he will manage that!
Well, with this another episode of Natsume Yujincho is over, and we have only two more left ahead of us! I feel like this is ending too soon, that the season went by too fast, and that we still need so much more of this perfect story! But hey, not all wishes can be granted! I am still glad we got a whole new season after so many years!
But anyways, I won’t take any more of your time! Feel free to let us here on MANGA.TOKYO know what your thoughts are on this episode of Natsume Yujincho! Have a nice weekend! 🙂
