After last week’s pretty phenomenal episode given the series standards, I have to say I was looking forward to finding out what is happening next. I was slightly disappointed, since what follows a great episode is usually a mediocre one, where few things happen just to set the stage for the next big thing. I also had to watch it with French subs, and much as I hate to admit it, my French is not as good as my English, which ended up causing me a headache. Boo.
Japanese Original Episode Title: 親密度を上げよう!
You know when you add wine to the food, and you need to wait for it to reduce so that the sauce doesn’t come out all watery and thin? That is what this episode was like. After the big events that occurred, we get a bit of a glimpse on what’s happening with everyone and how they’re dealing with the new status quo. There is a lot of talking, negotiating, and a brief but quite dramatic battle.
Snow White wakes up very confused, with a rabbit’s foot in her hand. Intense opening music plays. She gets to have a chat with FAV who explains that Hardgore Alice purchased the rabbit’s foot. I hate FAV. As Koyuki is starting to lose it, and while she clearly states she does not want to meet Alice again, she gets an invitation from Sister Nana. Fascinating.
In their fancy loft, Sister Nana is freaking out over La Pucelle’s death with Winterprison by her side. While trying to console her, Winterprison calculates the situation, wondering if La Pucelle’s death was not random. Genius. Sister Nana gets herself back together and for a brief moment they stare into each other’s eyes, smiling, sunset in the background. NOW KISS. They don’t. Instead they contact the AUCG.
The Peaky Angels are apparently terrified of meeting with Winterprison. Tama is moping about, looking severely depressed. Swim Swim gets a flashback of Ruler saying that stronger enemies need to be eliminated first, obviously considering how to get Winterprison out of the way, which, as I have already mentioned, is a very likely outcome.
Calamity Mary is trying to find her lackey, Magicaloid 44, and FAV informs her that she’s dead. She asks him (or it, who knows) who killed her, and he pulls out some crappy excuse about fair play to avoid telling her. She pours whiskey all over him and offers an exchange of information. She then lies back on the couch. Boobs bounce.
Calamity Mary and Hardgore Alice are having an all-out brawl on top of a building. Calamity Mary uses every single weapon she can pull out of her ass yet Alice is still alive. She ends up by burning her and throwing her ashes in a barrel filled with water and cement, which she then proceeds to throw in the sea. Hardgore Alice survives. No surprises there. She’s pretty damn strong. Calamity Mary finds out through the weekly announcements and starts laughing manically, without much reason.
Escaping the whole Magical Girl drama and into some real drama, a scene occurs following Ripple’s personal life. She is getting bullied in school by the boys in her class for her mom’s unstable romantic life, and, to my absolute delight, she gets into a fist fight and kicks a boy’s ass. She gets bullied by the girls who call her a slut because of her mom, and again, to my absolute delight, she gets into a fist fight and kicks a girl’s ass. Her fifth-in-a-row step dad tries to sexually harass her, and, to my absolute delight, yes, she kicks his ass, planting her foot in his face and moving out of the house. Dealing with her problems the efficient way. You go girl.
Snow White meets with Sister Nana and Winterprison and they form an alliance, finally. Hardgore Alice joins too. I’m not sure what they’re planning to do together. Snow White has a one-to-one with Alice who admits gifting her with the rabbit foot. No explanation whatsoever.
Ripple and Top Speed take care of the city fountain and have midnight lunch, discussing their age. Top Speed, who is older, encourages her, telling her that she is much very mature for her age, unlike how she was. Ripple gets an invitation by Calamity Mary, while Sister Nana and Winterprison arrive at the AUCG headquarters, obviously walking into a trap. Episode ends.
Themes & Trivia
They don’t kiss: Not in anime, not in dramas. Kissing and overall displays of affection in Japan are -and always were- a big deal.
Gothic Lolita: Hardgore Alice is dark and cute, dressed in contemporary Victorian and Edwardian-inspired Japanese fashion, with a hint of gothness. She is a gothic Lolita. There’s an MA Philosophy student from Auckland University of Technology in New Zealand who wrote his whole thesis on this subculture.
Slut shaming: In the series of everyday Japanese sexism, Ripple is experiencing nothing but the aftermath of her mom’s slut-shaming. Some of you might remember Minami Minegishi’s video apology for sleeping with her boyfriend. A disgusting, appalling reaction to natural human behaviour.
Bullying in Japanese Schools: Apparently, bullying in Japanese schools is in an all-time high right now, to the point where it has its own article section in Japan Times.
Quiet episode, with a touch of drama and battle here and there. I guess some pointless scenes could have been avoided like the one with Calamity Mary laughing senseless on the couch. But still, not too bad.
As I mentioned already, I believe this episode was a warm-up for all the hell that is about to break loose in the next one. Until then, stay safe, avoid rooftops at night, and don’t forget to check the rest of our episodic reviews.
