Megumin, Aqua, and Darkness – these three cute yet quirky girls are back in the second season of Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo!, more popularly known as KonoSuba. The last episode of the first season ended last March so we’ve already waited ten months just for this! Are you excited? I am!
Japanese Title: この不当な裁判に救援を！
KonoSuba’s story is that of a teenage boy named Kazuma Satou who was reincarnated into another world to eliminate the Demon King. Before reincarnating though, he was asked what he would like as God’s Blessing upon reincarnating into the new world. Instead of asking for immortality or other great cheats, he specifically asked to have the goddess accompany him in his journey. It was supposed to be his revenge for being summoned and that request was granted – of course, but not without a fuss from that goddess, Aqua.
Thus starts Kazuma’s adventures together with Aqua the goddess and other lovable characters, to get rid of the Demon King. Oh, but first he needs a job.
There are scenes in the episode that will surely get you laughing until you get stitches on the side. Here are episode highlights you shouldn’t miss in the first episode of KonoSuba 2.
Highlight #1: Arrest Time
After the exciting ending of the first season’s episode 1, you’d find yourself wondering why our male protagonist is curled up behind bars. Going back a few moments earlier, it seems that Kazuma is being charged with the crime of subversion of state. As the commander of the Destroyer attack, he is the one held responsible for having an explosion teleported into a lord’s mansion.
You’ll break into laughs as you watch everyone’s attempt to protest against Kazuma’s arrest only to betray him in the end – with Aqua reasoning that only one person needs to take the fall.
Highlight #2: The Rescue
Despite betraying Kazuma earlier, Aqua hatches a plan to break him out of prison that night. In her plan, Megumin and Darkness will create a commotion outside town. Once the guards thin out, Kazuma can pick the lock on his prison cell. She leaves Kazuma with a metal pick and excitedly waits outside of prison.
Of course, knowing Aqua, Kazuma isn’t the least bit excited. True to that, he finds that the metal pick isn’t of any use! He proceeds to throw it away and sleep, leaving Aqua to wait under the falling snow.
Highlight #3: The Rescue – Again
Aqua doesn’t give up. The next day, she comes around Kazuma’s cell to tell him of the plan she hatched for the night. It is still the same as the previous plan, but with little improvements.
Since the pick wasn’t of any help, she leaves Kazuma with a hacksaw instead. He is supposed to use that tool to remove the bars on the window. The only problem is that the window is higher than his head. Aqua, in her own geniusness, brought a stepping box. Now, the problem is how to pass it on to Kazuma as the box is bigger than the space between the window bars.
Again, this plan doesn’t work and so Kazuma goes to sleep.
Highlight #4: The Interrogation
Like most criminals, Kazuma needs to be interrogated. The one who interrogates him is Sena, the one who was leading the forces during his arrest.
As part of the interrogation, Sena places a tool on the table. It is similar in shape to a bell. It rings when someone is telling a lie.
The fun part starts here. Sena asks Kazuma questions. Although Kazuma is telling the truth, but with little coverups, the bell ring mercilessly. That is why he is forced to reveal things that he is embarrassed to say.
On the course of the investigation, the tables turn and he becomes arrogant. He even goes as far as in saying that Sena’s demeanor is the reason why she doesn’t have a man. It seems that Kazuma has gone overboard this time, causing Sena to go back to being serious and continue to interrogate him.
Highlight #5: The Public Trial
Things have taken a turn for the worse for Kazuma. He’s now facing public trial for the crime of being in cahoots with the Demon King and for being a terrorist! Worse, the punishment of a guilty verdict is hanging! He feels even more nervous for his life because the ones who will be defending him are Aqua, Megumin, and Darkness.
The witnesses brought forward slowly establish his character as a deviant. Even the ones supposedly there to defend him can’t save him. However, he was able to get out of the execution verdict by yelling that he isn’t working for the Demon King and he certainly isn’t a terrorist in the presence of the lie detector tool. Or did he?
Highlight #6: Seizure of Assets
In the previous season, Kazuma was able to build his assets. However, everything was seized right in front of his eyes. How did things end up this way??
It is really amazing how Aqua lacks usefulness, considering that she is supposed to be a goddess. Her great confidence in herself is a common inside joke, even during the first season. It seems that the same thing can be expected in this season too.
I like that the characters seem the same even in this second season. Aqua is still airheaded. Megumin still likes explosions a little too much. Darkness still shows the same reaction to the words like ‘punishment’ and such.
I’m expecting the second season to be as fun and exciting as the first season. Hopefully, Aqua becomes more useful to Kazuma. I don’t want them to change too much though. Everyone’s already lovable the way they are. You should adore them together with me next week here in MANGA.TOKYO! Let’s watch the next episode of Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo! 2.
